SC teenager killed in crash identified by Lexington County coroner

A teenager was killed and another person was injured Thursday when a pickup truck they were in flipped over, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said.

Brier Murray Hudson, a 19-year-old Pelion resident and passenger in the accident, died at the scene, according to Coroner Margaret Fisher.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9:45 p.m. in the 1500 block of Old Cherokee Road, said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s in Lexington, near the intersection with Wise Ferry Road, and about a mile from U.S. 378.

A 1998 GMC pickup was driving west on Old Cherokee Road when it ran off the left side of the road and crashed into a telephone pole before flipping over, according to Pye.

The driver was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, Fisher said. Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.

Neither the driver nor Hudson were wearing a seat belt, according to Fisher.

Information about what caused the pickup to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through Monday, 932 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 38 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 57 deaths were reported in the county, according to DPS data.
