Driver killed in crash when car flips over on highway in Richland County, SC cops say
One person was killed in a crash on an interstate running through Richland County, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The single-vehicle collision happened Thursday at about 11:30 a.m., according to Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell.
A 2007 Honda Accord was driving east on I-20 when it ran off the left side of the highway near the 71 mile marker, Tidwell said. That’s in Columbia, near Exit 71 which is the junction with U.S. 21/North Main Street.
The car crashed into the median and a concrete barrier before veering back onto I-20 where it flipped over, according to Tidwell.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim.
Tidwell said the driver was the only person in the car and no other injuries were reported.
Information about what caused the Honda to run off I-20 was not available, but it remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Through Monday, five people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,061 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
This was at least the second deadly crash in Richland County in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 64 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
The other confirmed fatal wreck in Richland County happened on New Year’s Day. The coroner’s office said Linda Fullard, a 63-year-old from Swainsboro, Georgia, was a pedestrian who was killed in a crash on I-20.
