Midlands man killed in car crash identified by coroner

A South Carolina man was killed over the weekend in a crash on a highway running through the Midlands, the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday.

Saquan Powell died in Sunday’s accident, according to the coroner’s office. The 25-year-old Santee resident died of multiple blunt force and internal injuries, the coroner’s office said.

The single-vehicle collision happened in the morning when Powell was driving a 2015 Infiniti Q50 north on Interstate 95, said Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Near the 90 mile marker, the car ran off the right side of the road where it hit a tree, according to Tidwell. Powell died at the scene, the coroner’s office said.

Tidwell said that Powell was the only person in the car, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if Powell was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the car to veer off I-95 was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Jan. 8, at least 18 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,063 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

This was the first fatal collision reported in Orangeburg County this year, DPS data shows. Last year, 45 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
