Teenage driver killed in crash identified by Lexington County coroner

A teenager who was killed in a crash over the weekend has been publicly identified by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.

Jackson Ryan Mack, an 18-year-old Gaston resident, died in Sunday night’s accident, Coroner Margaret Fisher said.

The single-vehicle collision happened on Pine Plain Road, according to Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s near the Swansea area, between U.S. 321 and Interstate 26.

Mack was driving a 2005 Honda Pilot north on Pine Plain Road, and the SUV ran off the right shoulder near the intersection with Frank Moorer Drive, Tidwell said. The SUV then collided with a tree, according to Tidwell.

Mack, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, Fisher said.

Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 45 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,075 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least two people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2023, DPS data shows. Last year, 43 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.

Mack was the second teenager killed in a crash on a Midlands road Sunday.

At about 3:30 p.m., 16-year-old William Shealy died at the scene of a two-vehicle collision in Lugoff, according to the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office.
