Pickup truck crashes into car parked on Midlands highway, killing driver, SC cops say

One person was killed when a pickup truck crashed into a car parked on the side of a major interstate running through the Midlands, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened Friday at about 6:30 p.m. in Clarendon County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.

A 2010 Ford pickup was driving south on Interstate 95 when a tire had a blowout, according to Bolt. That was at the 133 mile marker, near the Sumter County line.

The pickup ran off the right side of the highway before crashing into an unoccupied 2000 Ford Mustang that was legally parked on the shoulder, Bolt said.

The pickup continued veering off the side of I-95 and hit a tree before wrecking in a ditch, according to Bolt.

The driver was the only occupant in the pickup and died, Bolt said.

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pickup truck driver.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

The collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Jan. 29, at least 58 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,075 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least two people have died in Clarendon County crashes this year, DPS data shows. Last year, 15 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
