Driver killed when SUV collides with semi truck on Midlands road, SC cops say
One person was killed Tuesday when an SUV and a semi truck crashed on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 2 p.m. at an intersection in Sumter County, said Cpl. Tyler Tidwell.
A 2014 Chevrolet Equinox was driving south on Eastern School Road when it hit a 2003 Mack truck that was going west on East Brewington Road, according to Tidwell.
Both vehicles ran off the roads and crashed into a ditch, and the driver of the Chevy SUV died, Tidwell said.
Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said that Harley Trimnal III, a 77-year-old Sumter resident, died at the scene, the Sumter Item reported.
Tidwell said the truck driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing seat belts.
Through Monday, 110 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,075 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least three people have died in Sumter County crashes this year, DPS data shows. Last year, 29 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
