One person was killed Thursday while walking across railroad tracks in northeast Columbia, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred at 3 p.m. on the tracks that run parallel to Farrow Road near Dukes Hill Road, about three miles east of Columbia, Cpl. Tyler Tidwell said.

The pedestrian, whose identity has not yet been released, was struck by a 2019 Ford F-350 road-rail vehicle that was traveling along the tracks. Neither occupant of the vehicle was injured, Tidwell said.

Road-rail vehicles, also called hi-rail trucks or two-way vehicles, can operate on both roads and rail tracks and generally are used for railroad maintenance.
