Tire flies across interstate and crashes into an SUV, killing SC man, officials say
One person died days after being involved in a crash on a major interstate running through the Midlands, when a tire flew off one vehicle and smashed into the windshield of another, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Tuesday night.
Terry Lasyone, a 63-year-old Nichols resident, was killed, Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece said Wednesday.
The collision happened Sunday at about 1:10 p.m. on Interstate 26, according to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.
A 2013 Jeep Cherokee was driving east on I-26, Bolt said. At the 82 mile marker, which is in Newberry County, a tire from an unknown vehicle in one of the westbound lanes detached and hit the SUV’s windshield, according to Bolt.
Lasyone, who was a passenger in the SUV, was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital where he later died, officials said.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if anyone involved in the collision was wearing a seat belt.
The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.
Through Sunday, 197 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
This is the first fatal crash reported in Newberry County in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 10 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
