3-year-old and 6-year-old killed in crash on Midlands road identified by SC coroner
Two young children were killed Sunday in a crash on a Midlands road, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
Summerville residents Ariyannah Crosby, 6, and Saniya Stevens, 3, died of injuries suffered in the accident, the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office said Monday.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 5 p.m. in the Bowman area of Orangeburg County, according to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the Highway Patrol.
A 2017 GMC Terrain was driving east on U.S. 178 when it ran off the right side of the road and crashed into a ditch before hitting a tree, Bolt said.
The 27-year-old man who was driving the SUV was injured and had to be flown by helicopter to an area hospital, Bolt said. Further information on his condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if anyone in the SUV was wearing a seat belt or safety restraint.
Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through April 2, at least 221 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 13 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 46 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
