Motorcycle rider killed crashing into tree by Richland County road, SC cops say

One person was killed in an overnight motorcycle crash in Richland County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 1:20 a.m. on Hard Scrabble Road, Cpl. Tyler Tidwell said Sunday.

A 2009 Harley-Davidson was traveling south between U.S. 21 and Interstate 77 in Columbia when it veered off the left side of Hard Scrabble Road near the intersection with Dresden Drive, Tidwell said.

The motorcycle then went down an embankment and crashed into a tree, killing the rider, Tidwell said.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not identified the motorcyclist.

Tidwell said the deceased was the only occupant on the motorcycle, and no other injuries were reported.

It was not disclosed whether the victim was wearing a helmet.

Information about what caused the motorcycle to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through April 9, at least 242 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 14 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 67 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
