Pickup truck runs off SC road and flips over, killing driver, Highway Patrol says
One person was killed Monday night when a pickup truck ran off a Midlands road and crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 8 p.m. in Sumter County, Cpl. David Jones said Tuesday.
A 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche was driving east on U.S. 378 when it ran off the right side of the road near the intersection with Triton Road, according to Jones. The pickup flipped over several times as it crashed, Jones said.
The Chevy driver was taken to an area hospital and later died, according to Jones.
The Sumter County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 257 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 10 people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 30 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
