One person killed, another injured when car crashes into tree by SC road, cops say
One person was killed and another was injured Monday when a car crashed into a tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 8 a.m. in Darlington County, said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.
A 2003 Honda Accord was driving east on Secondary 351 and ran off the left side of the road and car crashed into a tree near 14th Street, according to Butler.
Both the driver and a passenger were hurt and taken to area hospitals, and the passenger later died, Butler said.
The Darlington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the passenger.
Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either of the people in the Honda were wearing seat belts.
Information about what caused the Honda to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 298 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 10 people have died in Darlington County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 18 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
