South Carolina man killed when SUV flipped in crash is identified by coroners office

The South Carolina man who was killed last week in a crash was publicly identified by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office on Sunday night.

Anthony J. Henderson, a 36-year-old Lexington resident, died in the May 3 accident, Coroner Margaret Fisher said.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 5:45 p.m. on Muddy Springs Road, according to Cpl. Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Henderson was driving a 2006 GMC Envoy east on Muddy Springs Road, and near the intersection with Bledsoe Drive the SUV ran off the right side of the road, Tidwell said. That’s in the Red Bank area, near Interstate 20.

The SUV crashed into a ditch and flipped over, according to Tidwell.

Henderson, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, Fisher said.

Tidwell said that Henderson was the only person in the SUV, and no other injuries were reported.

Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through April 30, at least 298 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 10 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 43 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
