Part of highway blocked following crash near Malfunction Junction
Drivers making the Thursday morning commute in Columbia were delayed by a crash that caused a traffic jam in the area called “Malfunction Junction.”
A westbound lane on Interstate 20 was temporarily closed by the wreck near Exit 63, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. That’s in Richland County, near the Lexington County line, and is the exit for Bush River Road.
The crash occurred at about 8:10 a.m., according to SCDOT.
Information about the cause of the collision, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available. Traffic cameras showed at least two vehicles stopped in the far left passing lane.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety did not say if anyone was injured in the crash.
Vehicles were backed up for more than a mile as drivers negotiated their way through the area of I-20 with a closed lane, traffic cameras showed.
At about 8:20 a.m., SCDOT said all of the lanes had been reopened, but there was no word on how long it would take to clear the scene.
