Driver killed after pickup truck hits deer and crashes into tree, SC cops say
One person was killed Sunday night when a pickup truck crashed into a deer and tree on a Midlands road, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9:30 p.m. in Lee County, according to Master Trooper Gary Miller.
A 2000 Ford F-150 was driving south on S.C. 341 near the intersection with Log Cabin Road when the pickup collided with a deer, Miller said. The pickup then ran off the right side of the road and crashed into a tree, killing the driver, according to Miller.
The Lee County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pickup driver.
Miller said the driver was the only person in the pickup, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Through May 7, at least 321 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least two people have died in Lee County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 11 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
