Midlands man killed when his bicycle was hit by a vehicle, SC coroner says
A Midlands man was killed Tuesday when the bicycle he was riding was hit by a motor vehicle, the Newberry County Coroner’s Office said.
Gregory Craig Wadsworth, a 50-year-old Newberry resident, was the bike rider, Coroner Laura Kneece said Wednesday in a news release.
At about 6 p.m., Wadsworth was riding his bike at the intersection of Kendall Road and Louis Rich Road when the collision happened, according to the release. That’s about a mile from Newberry College.
Wadsworth was taken to a hospital in Richland County where he died, Kneece said.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if Wadsworth was wearing a helmet.
Information about what caused the collision was not available, but the crash is being investigated by the coroner’s office as well as the Newberry Police Department, with assistance from the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 346 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least three people have died in Newberry County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 10 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
