One killed, another hurt in car crash on Richland County road, SC Highway Patrol says

One person was killed and another was hospitalized following a crash on a Richland County road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Although the two-vehicle collision happened May 20, it was first publicly reported Saturday.

The crash happened at about 2:40 a.m. at the intersection of Congaree Road and Air Base Road, said Cpl. Tyler Tidwell. That’s in the Hopkins area, near McEntire Joint National Guard Base.

Both a 2011 Honda Accord and a 2013 Lexus ES were driving east on Air Base Road when they collided, according to Tidwell.

The Honda driver died at the scene, Tidwell said.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not released the name of the driver who was killed.

A passenger in the Honda was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital, according to Tidwell. Further information on the passenger’s condition was not available.

Tidwell said the Highway Patrol did not have the name or condition of the Lexus driver. It’s not clear if either of the drivers were military personnel.

No other injuries were reported in the collision.

There was no word if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seat belt.

Details about what caused the cars to collide was not available, but it continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through May 21, at least 370 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 21 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 67 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
