A Summerton man was killed in a collision in Sumter on Friday, the Sumter County Coroner said.

Eugene Olsen Jr., 78, of Summerton, was pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m. Friday at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, the coroner’s office said. The collision occurred at the intersection of South Lafayette Drive and Fulton Street in Sumter shortly before 9 a.m. Friday.

Olsen’s vehicle was struck by another vehicle on the driver’s side, Sumter County Coroner Robert Baker said. Olsen was alert and responsive on the scene when he was transported to the emergency room, Baker said. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to the hospital, Baker said. The release did not say whether either driver had been found at fault or charged.

An autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston early next week, according to the release.

The Sumter Police Department and the Sumter County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
