Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run crash identified by Richland County coroner
One person was killed early Monday morning in a hit-and-run crash in Richland County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Gabriel D. Taber, a 45-year-old Eastover resident, is the pedestrian who was killed, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Tuesday.
The collision happened at about 12:55 a.m., said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.
Taber was walking on Two Notch Road and was hit by an unknown northbound vehicle near the intersection with Oneil Court, according to Glover. That’s in the Dentsville area, near Exit 74 on Interstate 20 and Columbia Place Mall.
Glover said the vehicle left the scene after the crash, and there was no word about the identity of the driver or the make and model of the vehicle.
The Highway Patrol said the vehicle could be burgundy or maroon in color, and could have damage to the front or passenger side.
Taber died at the scene, according to Glover.
No other injuries were reported in the crash that continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through June 4, at least 425 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 26 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 67 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
