Woman killed in crash where SUV hit fence and tree identified by Lexington County coroner
One person was killed Sunday when an SUV crashed in Lexington County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Wanda Geiselle Colburn, a 63-year-old Lexington resident, died in the accident, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Monday.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 3:30 p.m. near the Red Bank area, said Lance Cpl. Len Butler.
A 2018 Nissan Rogue was driving on McLee Road when it ran off the right side of the road near the intersection with Bluefield Road, according to Butler. The SUV then crashed into a fence and a tree before flipping over, Butler said.
Colburn died at the scene, according to Butler.
Butler said Colburn was the only person in the SUV and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if Colburn was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Through June 18, at least 458 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 20 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 43 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
