South Carolina man killed in early morning crash, coroner says

A South Carolina man was killed Sunday when the bicycle he was riding was hit by a vehicle in an early-morning crash, according to the Greenwood County Coroner’s Office.

John Michael Sontag, a 65-year-old Greenwood resident, died in the accident, the coroner’s office said in a news release.

The collision happened before 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 25 and Blyth Road, according to the release.

The crash happened on the road and Sontag died at the scene after suffering blunt force trauma, the coroner’s office said.

There was no word if the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, or rendered aid.

No other injuries were reported in the bike crash that continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the Greenwood Police Department.

Through July 9, 505 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, and nine involved bicycles, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 10 people have died in Greenwood County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 13 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
