Driver killed when car crashes into fence and tree, SC Highway Patrol says
One person was killed when a car crashed into multiple objects, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The single-vehicle collision happened Monday in Clarendon County, according to Lance Cpl. William Bennett.
A 2010 Toyota sedan was driving north on Washington Davis Road when it ran off the road and hit a fence before crashing into a tree, Bennett said. That’s in the Summerton area, near Lake Marion.
The driver died at the scene, according to Bennett.
The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Bennett said the driver was the only person in the car, and no other injuries were reported.
Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available. The Highway Patrol did not say if the crash remains under investigation.
Through Sunday, 561 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 12 people have died in Clarendon County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 15 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
