SC man ejected from vehicle that ran off road dies at hospital, coroner says

A Midlands man was killed after getting ejected from a vehicle during a crash, the Sumter County Coroner’s Office said.

Norris Brown, a 34-year-old Sumter resident, died in the July 29 accident, Coroner Robbie Baker said in a news release.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 10:30 p.m. in Sumter, according to the release.

Brown was in a vehicle that was driving west on South Pike West, Baker said. Near the intersection with U.S. 521/Camden Highway the vehicle ran off the road, and Brown, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle, according to Baker.

Brown was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital where he died, according to the release.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about what caused the vehicle to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the coroner and the Sumter Police Department.

Through Sunday, 577 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 19 people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 30 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
