Crash blocks all westbound lanes on highway running through Lexington County

A Sunday morning crash on a major highway caused a traffic jam for drivers in Lexington County.

All of the westbound lanes on Interstate 26 were blocked following the collision at the 91 mile marker, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. That’s in Chapin, not far from the Richland County line.

The crash was reported at about 9:05 a.m., according to SCDOT.

Additionally, at about 9:15 a.m., SCDOT reported that one eastbound lane at the 91 mile marker of I-26 was closed following a separate crash on the opposite side of the highway.

Information about the cause of the crashes, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety did not say if anyone was injured in the crashes.

Traffic cameras showed a stretch of more than 5 miles of I-26 was empty as vehicles were blocked because of the crash.

By about 10:15 a.m., SCDOT reported that both crashes had been cleared.
