South Carolina man killed in crash involving motor scooter, coroner says

A South Carolina man was killed Wednesday in a crash that involved a motor scooter, the Oconee County Coroner’s Office said.

Dustin “Dusty” Tyler Abercrombie, a 41-year-old Seneca resident, died in the accident, Coroner Karl Addis said in a news release.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 2:30 p.m. in Oconee County, said Cpl. Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Abercrombie was driving a 2004 Suzuki motor scooter north on S.C. 11, and at an intersection he collided with a 2010 Kia that was heading east on Mountain Road/Critter Road, according to Tidwell.

Abercrombie suffered traumatic injuries and died at the scene, the coroner’s office said.

Tidwell said the driver was the only person in the Kia, and was not hurt. No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing safety restraints.

Information about why the vehicles collided was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Monday, 705 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least six people have died in Oconee County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 16 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
