Crash blocks busy downtown road and causes injuries, Columbia police say

A busy downtown road was closed Tuesday afternoon following a crash that left multiple people hospitalized, according to the Columbia Police Department.

Police reported the four-vehicle collision at about 1:20 p.m.

The 2200 block of Main Street was blocked because of the wreck, police said. That’s near the intersection with Elmwood Avenue, about a mile from the South Carolina State House.

Information about when the section of the road might reopen was not available.

At least two people were taken to an area hospital, according to the police. Further information on their conditions was not available.

There was no word on what caused the collision, but it continues to be investigated by police.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible, otherwise they should expect delays until the scene is cleared.
