Woman killed in crash that left another person hospitalized is identified by SC coroner
A woman was killed and another person was injured Sunday in an early-morning crash, according to South Carolina officials.
Shavonna Jones, a 27-year-old Winnsboro resident, died in the accident, Fairfield County Coroner Chris Hill said Monday.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 2 a.m. in Fairfield County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
A 2015 Ford Fusion was driving west on Blair Circle, and the car ran off the road near the intersection with Fagan Road, according to Miller. That’s in the Winnsboro area, near U.S. 321.
The car crashed into a utility pole and Jones, who was a front-seat passenger died, Miller said.
The driver was taken to an area hospital, according to Miller. Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.
Miller said there were no other passengers and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either the driver or passenger were wearing seat belts.
An autopsy is scheduled with Newberry Pathology to confirm Jones’ cause of death, according to Hill.
Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Through Sept. 27, 727 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least nine people have died in Fairfield County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, nine deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
