Stretch of busy downtown road closed after crash, Columbia police say

A stretch of a busy downtown road was closed Thursday afternoon following a crash, the Columbia Police Department said.

At about 1:15 p.m., police reported the multi-vehicle collision.

The wreck happened at the intersection of Gervais and Sumter streets, according to police. That’s near the South Carolina State House.

The stretch of Sumter Street, from Gervais to Lady streets, was closed to traffic as police investigate the cause of the crash.

Police said officers are trying to find out if anyone was injured in the collision.

There was no word on the number of vehicles involved.

Information on how long the road would be blocked was not available, but drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible.
