Person killed in crash, that left three others hospitalized, is identified by SC coroner

One person was killed and three others were hospitalized following a crash between an SUV and a bicycle, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Michael Locklear, a 33-year-old Moncks Corner resident, was pronounced dead in the emergency room of a South Carolina hospital, the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office said Monday.

The collision happened at about 8:50 p.m. on Wednesday in Berkeley County, said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye.

A 2019 Chevrolet SUV was driving east on College Park Road, according to Pye. Near the intersection with College Drive the Chevy collided with a westbound bicycle that was turning left into a private driveway, Pye said. That’s close to Exit 203 on Interstate 26, about 20 miles from Charleston.

The bike rider died, while the SUV driver and two passengers in the Chevy were taken to an area hospital, according to Pye.

Further information on the conditions of the SUV driver and passengers was not available.

There was no word if the bike rider was wearing a helmet, or if any of the people in the Chevy were wearing seat belts.

No other injuries were reported in the crash that continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Wednesday, 765 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 46 people have died in Berkeley County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 49 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
