A Midlands elementary school student was hospitalized after being hit by a car while walking to school Wednesday morning.

According to Richland School District 1, the student is a third-grader at Mill Creek Elementary School, which is near Garners Ferry Road in the Lower Richland area.

The student was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Law enforcement authorities are investigating the accident, the district said.
