Student hit by vehicle while walking to elementary school in Columbia, officials say

An elementary school student was hospitalized Wednesday after being hit by a vehicle while walking to his school in Columbia, officials said.

The male student is in the third grade at Mill Creek Elementary School, Richland 1 officials said in a news release. That’s on Universal Drive in the area between Garners Ferry Road and Caughman Road.

He was taken to an area hospital, where he remained as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to the release. Further information on the child’s condition was not available.

The collision is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Information about the circumstances of the crash were not available, and there was no word if the driver involved stopped and/or called emergency responders.

“We ask everyone to join us in praying for the student’s full and speedy recovery,” Richland 1 Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon said in the release.
