Pedestrian killed after being hit by SUV in an SC road, highway patrol says

One person was killed and another was injured Thursday night after a car hit a pedestrian in Richland County.

Just before 9 p.m., a 2002 Chevrolet SUV was driving north on Fairfield Road, about six miles north of Columbia, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Master Trooper Brendan Bolt said that the SUV hit a pedestrian in the roadway, and then swerved off the road and struck two parked vehicles.

The pedestrian is dead. Details of the deceased have not yet been publicly released by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the SUV was injured in the accident, Bolt said, and was transported to a local hospital by EMS.

As of Friday, 851 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

The collision remains under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.
