Traffic jam backs up vehicles for over a mile on major highway running through Lexington

Drivers were delayed by a Wednesday morning crash that completely blocked one side of a major highway running through Lexington County.

All of the eastbound lanes heading toward Columbia on Interstate 20 were closed near Exit 61, which is the junction with U.S. 378, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. That’s in Lexington, not far from the Richland County line and the area called Malfunction Junction.

The collision also caused the eastbound exit ramp at Exit 61 to be closed, according to the Lexington Police Department.

The crash happened at about 9:50 a.m., and the lanes were still blocked as of 10:50 a.m., according to SCDOT.

Information about the cause of the collision, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety has not reported any injuries.

Vehicles were backed up for more than a mile, traffic cameras showed.

Traffic is being diverted onto U.S. 1 at Exit 58, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

There was no word when it’s expected that the lanes would be reopened and the scene cleared.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible, otherwise they should expect delays.
