Two killed when car runs off South Carolina road and crashes into tree, cops say
Two people were killed Sunday night when a car ran off a road and crashed into a tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9 p.m. in Greenville County, said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye.
A 2006 Chrysler sedan was driving south on Pelzer Road, and near the intersection with Peden Road the car swerved off the right side and hit a tree, according to Pye.
The driver and a passenger died, Pye said.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victims.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either the driver or passenger was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Wednesday, 210 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 999 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 22 people have died in Greenville County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 75 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
