Teen brother & sister killed in early-morning SUV crash, South Carolina officials say

A brother and sister were killed Sunday in a crash that left another victim hospitalized, according to South Carolina officials.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 3 a.m. in Spartanburg County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A 2022 Jeep Wrangler SUV was driving north on Spring Street, according to Miller. Near the intersection with Lee Court the SUV ran off the right side of the road where the driver lost control causing the vehicle to swerve back across Spring Street and off the left side of the road, where it crashed into a tree and flipped over, Miller said.

The driver and one of two passengers in the SUV died, according to Miller.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office said 19-year-old Jesus Guadalupe Gaspar Sandoval and his sister, 18-year-old Emory Desiree Gaspar, died at the scene, WYFF reported. Information about which sibling was driving was not available.

The coroner’s office said that neither teenager was wearing a seat belt, WSPA reported.

The other passenger was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Miller said. Further information on the surviving victim’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the surviving victim was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what originally caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through July 21, at least 502 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 34 people have died in Spartanburg County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
