Woman killed in overnight crash on busy Columbia road, police say

A pedestrian was killed Monday night when she was involved in a crash on a busy road, according to the Columbia Police Department.

At about 9 p.m., the female was walking across Garners Ferry Road in the 7300 block when she was hit by at least two vehicles, Deputy Chief of Police Melron Kelly said Tuesday in a news release. That’s near Exit 9 on Interstate 77, in an area that’s densely packed with hotels and restaurants.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.

No other injuries were reported.

Both drivers stopped after the crashes and there were no signs that either was impaired, Kelly told The State.

Information about the cause of the collisions was not available, but Kelly said they don’t appear to be weather related. Kelly said the pedestrian was not in the crosswalk and was wearing dark-colored clothing.

Officers interviewed witnesses and are canvassing for video of the crashes, according to Kelly.

Through Sunday, 534 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 29 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 61 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
