Golf cart driver killed in crash with SUV on Lexington County road, SC cops say

A Midlands man was killed Wednesday when the golf cart he was driving on the road was involved in a crash with an SUV, South Carolina officials said.

Christopher Dean Hoffman, 51, of Swansea, died in what Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said was an accident.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 10:40 a.m. in the Swansea area of Lexington County, said Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Hoffman was driving a 2000 Club Car golf cart south on Huckabee Mill Road, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with Tickle Weed Road the golf cart was hit from behind by a 2014 Ford Expedition that was also heading south Huckabee Mill Road, Bennett said.

The golf cart then overturned and Hoffman, who was the only person in the Club Car, died at the scene, according to Bennett.

Bennett said that neither the SUV driver nor a passenger in the Ford were injured.

There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing safety restraints, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through Aug. 4, at least 534 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 29 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 45 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
