1 driver killed, another hurt in early morning crash on South Carolina road, cops say

One person was killed and another was injured Saturday morning in a crash on Interstate 77 that involved an SUV and car, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened on a stretch of I-77 that’s in the Cayce area of Lexington County, said Cpl. Nick Pye.

At about 6:20 a.m., a 2011 Ford SUV was driving south on I-77, and at the 1-mile marker it collided with a 2022 Volkswagen sedan that was also heading south, but had stopped on the highway, according to Pye.

Information about why the Volkswagen was stopped on I-77 was not available.

The Volkswagen driver died and the Ford driver was taken to an area hospital, Pye said.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Volkswagen driver. Further information on the Ford driver’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word whether either of the drivers was wearing a seat belt, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Aug. 18, at least 552 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 32 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 45 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS reported.

This was the third fatal collision in Lexington County in the past four days, and four people have died in the unrelated wrecks.
