Driver killed and four passengers hospitalized after SUV crashes by SC road, cops say
One person was killed and four others were injured Monday when an SUV crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 4:45 p.m. in Orangeburg County, said Master Trooper William Bennett.
A 2006 Toyota Sequoia was driving north on U.S. 321/Savannah Highway, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with Baptist Church Road the SUV ran off the right side of Savannah Highway and crashed into a ditch then flipped over, Bennett said.
The driver died at the scene while two of the passengers were taken to an area hospital and the other two were taken to a hospital in Augusta, Georgia, according to Bennett.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
Further information on the conditions of the passengers was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if any of the people involved in the wreck were wearing seat belts.
Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 563 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 28 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 36 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
