Tractor driver killed in crash with SUV on South Carolina road, Highway Patrol says

One person was killed and two others were hospitalized following a recent crash that involved an SUV and a tractor, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened Friday in Edgefield County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.

At about 3:45 p.m., a John Deere tractor and a 2020 Cadillac SUV were driving north on S.C. 191, according to Bolt. As the tractor started to turn into a private driveway, the SUV attempted to pass and collided with the John Deere, Bolt said.

The tractor driver died, according to Bolt.

The Edgefield County Coroner’s Office said 29-year-old Ridge Spring resident Eduardo Hernandez Ortega was the tractor driver who died at the scene, television stationWRDW reported. Ortega was the only person on the tractor, according to Bolt.

Both the SUV driver and a passenger were hurt and taken to an area hospital, Bolt said. Further information on their conditions was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seat belt or safety restraint, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sept. 1, at least 582 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
