Columbia man dies after car wreck, but crash likely didn’t kill him, SC coroner says
A South Carolina man died Sunday following a crash on Interstate 20, but the wreck likely did not kill him, according to the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office.
Raymond T. Griffin, a 78-year-old Columbia resident, was a passenger in the vehicle that crashed near the 87 mile marker on the westbound side of I-20, Coroner David West said Monday in a news release. West called the wreck an accident.
The collision on I-20 happened before 3 p.m., according to the release.
Both Griffin and the driver were taken to a hospital in Columbia, where the 78-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival, according to West.
“It appears that Mr. Griffin did not die due to the accident,” West said. “Mr. Griffin had a number of medical problems.”
No cause of death was issued by the coroner’s office, and information about Griffin’s medical problems was not available.
Griffin was wearing a seat belt, according to West. There was no word if the driver, who West said was treated and released from the hospital, was wearing a seat belt.
Information about the cause of the crash, and if any other vehicles were involved, was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
