SC woman dies days after crash that left another person hospitalized, coroner says
A West Columbia woman died days after she and another pedestrian were hit by a vehicle, according to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.
Heidi M. Bahrs, 49, is the woman who died in what Coroner Margaret Fisher called an accident Monday in a news release.
The collision happened at about 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 21, in the 800 block of Chris Drive, according to the release. That’s next to Interstate 26 in the part of West Columbia that’s between U.S. 378/Sunset Boulevard and U.S. 1/Augusta Road.
Bahrs was in the road when she was hit by a vehicle that was driving north on Chris Drive, Fisher said.
Both Bahrs and another pedestrian were taken to an area hospital, where she died Sunday from the injuries she suffered in the collision, according to the release.
Fisher said the other pedestrian suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Further information on that pedestrian’s condition was not available.
The driver involved in the crash stopped following the collision and called 911, according to the release.
The crash continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office as well as the West Columbia Police Department and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Through Oct. 20, at least 785 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 42 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 45 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
