SC highway exit to permanently close in effort to improve traffic at Malfunction Junction
A well-traveled highway exit in Columbia will close Tuesday night in the latest step in the Carolina Crossroads Project to improve the traffic flow in the area known as Malfunction Junction, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
The westbound exit ramp to Bush River Road off of Interstate 26 will be blocked for good, SCDOT said Monday night in news release.
The move comes months after the eastbound Bush River Road Exit on I-26 was permanently closed in September.
Drivers looking to access Bush River Road from I-26 now must use the new Colonial Life ramp on Interstate 126 westbound just past St. Andrews Road, according to the release.
“This permanent traffic change will significantly affect how drivers navigate the area,” SCDOT said.
This move is one of many that are part of the Carolina Crossroads Project, to change and improve traffic in the area near the line between Richland and Lexington counties where there’s a junction for I-26, I-126 and Interstate 20, according to SCDOT.
“This is a significant milestone for the Carolina Crossroads Project,” SCDOT said. “Drivers are advised to use caution and follow all traffic signage as SCDOT continues to enhance the safety and accessibility of the Carolina Crossroads corridor.”
