South Carolina man killed in crash involving pickup truck, coroner says

A South Carolina man was killed Wednesday when he was hit by a pickup truck on a Midlands road, according to the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.

James Rayan Weikel, a 42-year-old Kershaw County resident, was the pedestrian who died in what Coroner Robbie Baker called an accident.

The collision occurred at about 12:40 a.m. in Sumter County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Weikel was wearing dark clothing as he was walking south on Black River Road, according to Miller. In an unlit area near the intersection with Rice Drive, Weikel was hit by a 2012 Suzuki pickup truck that was driving south on Black River Road, Miller said.

Weikel died at the scene from injuries he suffered in the crash, according to Baker.

Miller said the pickup driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Baker said the collision is being investigated by his office and the Highway Patrol. An autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, according to Baker.

No charges will be filed, Miller said.

Through Sunday, 885 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 19 people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 30 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
