Columbia woman killed in crash that left another driver hospitalized, SC officials say
A Midlands woman was killed early Sunday morning in a crash that left another person hospitalized, according to South Carolina officials.
Monica Wright, a 48-year-old Columbia resident, died in what Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker called an accident.
The multi-vehicle collision happened at about 2 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 378/Broad Street and S.C. 261/South Kings Highway, Baker said in a news release. That’s near Shaw Air Force Base.
Wright was driving a 2015 Dodge pickup truck east on Broad Street and it collided with a 2001 Ford sedan that was heading in the same direction on the road, according to Cpl. Nick Pye of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Wright died at the scene from the injuries she suffered in the crash, Baker said.
The Ford driver was hurt and taken to an area hospital, according to Pye. Further information on that driver’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available, but the wreck is being investigated by the Highway Patrol as well as the coroner’s office.
An autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.
Through Dec. 8, at least 905 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 20 people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 30 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
