Driver killed and another person hurt when car crashes into multiple objects, SC cops say
One person was killed and another was hospitalized Tuesday when a car ran off a Columbia-area road and crashed into multiple objects, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Evelyn Reynolds, a 77-year-old Lugoff resident, was the victim who died in the crash, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Wednesday.
The single-vehicle collision happened in Richland County at about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, said Master Trooper William Bennett.
Reynolds was driving a 2013 Hyundai Elantra south on McCord’s Ferry Road in the Eastover area, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with Joe Collins Road the car ran off the right side of the McCord’s Ferry Road, where it hit railroad tracks then went down an embankment and crashed into two trees and a utility pole, Bennett said.
Reynolds died at the scene, according to Bennett.
A passenger was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital, Bennett said. Further information on the passenger’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either the driver or passenger were wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 926 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 49 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 61 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
