A Cayce woman was killed Wednesday after being struck on Charleston Highway in Lexington County, the county coroner said.

The victim, identified as 91-year-old Joyce P. Backman, had exited her vehicle after being involved in a collision with another driver when she and the other driver were both struck by a third vehicle, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a statement.

The collision occurred just after 6 p.m. in the 2400 block of Charleston Highway in the Cayce area of Lexington County, the coroner said.

Backman and the other pedestrian victim, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, were both transported to area hospitals. Backman was pronounced dead at the hospital, the coroner said.

The driver of the third vehicle was not injured and remained on scene. It wasn’t immediately clear if that motorist was criminally charged.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office and the Cayce Police Department are investigating the crash.
