Driver killed when car runs off road and crashes into tree, South Carolina cops say
One person was killed Sunday in an early morning crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened in Calhoun County, said Cpl. Nick Pye.
A 2014 Chevrolet sedan was driving north on U.S. 601 when it ran off the left side of the road near the intersection with U.S. 176, according to Pye. The car crashed into a tree and the driver died, Pye said.
The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
Pye said the driver was the only person in the Chevy, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 948 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least six people have died in Calhoun County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
