Driver killed when pickup truck runs off road and crashes, South Carolina cops say
One person was killed early Sunday morning when a pickup truck crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 2 a.m. in Florence County, said Cpl. Nick Pye.
A 1998 Chevrolet pickup was driving west on U.S. 378, according to Pye. Near the intersection with Capitola Road the Chevy ran off the right side of U.S. 378 then hit an embankment and flipped over, Pye said.
The driver died, according to Pye.
The Florence County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
Pye said the driver was the only person in the pickup, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Jan. 19, at least 30 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least two people have died in Florence County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 25 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
