Driver dies when car runs off Richland County road and flips, South Carolina cops say
One person was killed Saturday when a car crashed in Richland County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 2 p.m., said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.
A 2014 Ford Focus was driving west on Clemson Road, according to Butler. Near the intersection with Old Clemson Road, the Ford ran off the left side of the road and flipped over, Butler said. That’s in a part of Columbia near the junction with Two Notch Road.
The driver died at the scene, according to Butler.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Ford driver.
Butler said the driver was the only person in the Ford, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the Ford to veer off the road was not available, and Butler did not say if the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Jan. 26, at least 33 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least three people have died in Richland County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 52 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
